Prometheus has become the mainstream monitoring tool of choice in container and microservice world. 🔥
In this video you will learn:
1) Why Prometheus is so important in such infrastructure and what are some specific use cases
2) How Prometheus works? What are targets and metrics?
3) How does Prometheus collect those metrics from its targets?
4) Furthermore, I explain Prometheus Architecture with simple diagrams and animations and go through the main components: Prometheus Server, Pushgateway, Alertmanager
5) The advantages of Prometheus Pull System compared to alternative monitoring tools, which use Push System
6) Using Prometheus Monitoring with Docker and Kubernetes
You will also understand better why it’s important to monitor your applications/infrastructure in general.

    • @TechWorld with Nana I have a doubt with respect to Prometheus setup for Django applications. If we have a load balancer which redirects to three application servers where the Django applications are running. Which of these setups will work and is optimally correct? 1. Having Prometheus installed in one of the application servers and then having a job for every Django application we need to monitor and provide all three application server's Django configuration details in the targets entry in prometheus.yml? - One more doubt, in this case, is when the targets are authenticated using OAuth, how can we manage in this scenario? 2. Installing Prometheus on any server and mentioning all the Django applications details in the targets entry in prometheus.yml file? - Do we need to have ssh trust set up in this case when the setup has to be done like this? It will be very helpful if you please give some insights on this. Thanks in advance :)

  • Excellent video! With one exception... your explanation of the benefits of pull vs push monitoring is incorrect. The load on your network will be identical whether a pull or push system IF the sample rate for metrics is identical. Pull also implies that all services have accessible endpoints to pull data from where as push can allow for services with zero open network ports. There is more to it... but should help provoke thought. Glad to hear Prometheus has this push gateway option for use cases where this is a better architecture.

I can't wait!!! because I have deployed prometheus and grafana independently (grafana use prometheus datasource) and it works successfully but I when I deploy prometheus-operator, There's no data :(, I need prometheus operator because it provides more metric example instead of importing manually when I use prometheus-&grafana independenly :D

  • Hey Nana, Not quite sure if I missed something in the video or if someone else answered already but at around 12:52, you mention that Push metrics creates a "high load of network traffic", but I don't quite understand why a pull mechanism would be able to avoid that? You still need your prometheus servers to poll every microservice that would have been potentially pushing metrics at the same frequency right? Why does the "pull" mechanism put less load on your system?

    Arash OutadiArash Outadiमहिन्यापूर्वी
    • Imagine a world where you have to sort papers and archive them. If you get sent papers all the time from a load of clients you might get a huge backlog and you are unable to keep up with all notes you get. And if you are unavailable people will come back later or perhaps not even send the data. But if you only go get papers when you can handle them, the client can write more and more stuff on the same paper that you can handle in one go instead of getting the same data in 20 different papers. I'd say it's easier to send requests than to get them. Since the requests can vary in size greatly also there is a overhead to receiving connections after a certain scale. If you are running 100VMs with a total of 500services it's not that big of an issue, but start running thousands and thousands you'll get some bottlenecks quite fast.

I am thinking of setting up a probe/box/container with a windows_exporter installed and from that probe, I will scrape the metrics I want? Is that possible or do I need to install windows_exporter to every windows target I will scape metrics from?

  • Thanks much Nana...this is very helpful and great way to learn Prometheus. A gentle request to have session on Prometheus Cluster. Would be great to take Prometheus a step forward.
